- For a person who doesn't own a car, grocery shopping can be a pain in the ass. So getting your food delivered to you with all of the ingredients needed to make a meal (6-9 meals worth in my case) is fantastic!
- I'm not a big cook, like AT ALL, but Blue Apron has been slowly teaching me how to cook and become more comfortable with it. It is a time-consuming activity, but it's become relaxing and fun! Plus, it's my time to listen to my favorite podcasts, Pop Culture Happy Hour and Ask Me Another.
- The ingredients to make these meals are often times things I have never made before and sometimes items I have never even HEARD of before. I love this part of it. It introduces me to new foods and forces me to learn what to do with these foods. For example, in the tortilla soup recipe it used hominy, which I guess I had heard the word before, but had NO clue what it actually looked like. Turns out it looks like little white puffy/chewy balls of corn (I think?).
- Even when I did cook, buying ingredients was always a hassle. Let's say the recipe only calls for 1 carrot. Instead of being able to buy one carrot (or have it seem economical to only buy one), I have to buy a bunch. Then I am stuck with a whole bunch of carrots that I may not eat, and even if I do, because I am a single gal, I have to eat them every day for the next week before they rot. Not cool. With Blue Apron, they send you the EXACT measurements of what you need for every recipe. The only thing they send too much of is garlic. I do not need a full garlic bulb every time, Blue Apron. I have far too many. On the plus side, no vampires are bothering our kitchen!
- Price-wise it's not horrible. It's $59 for the 6 meals worth. So about $10/meal. Like I said, I often stretch that out to around 8 or 9 meals, so it ends up being around $7/meal. Since I eat out a lot anyways, this isn't too bad.
- Thus far, the recipes have been REALLY good. There have only been a few that were really so-so. Plus, I'm eating much healthier than I normally would- SO many vegetables! I do wish that it could come with side dishes of fruit or something as well. But alas, I'll just have to buy/eat them on my own. Blue Apron can't do EVERYTHING for me ;)
- They make it easy to sign up and to skip deliveries. Once you've signed up for your first week and input your credit card information, you can see what the menus are for the next 3-4 weeks and decide to skip weeks that far in advance. Just as long as you remember to do it a week before the delivery actually comes, you won't get charged.
- You are able to switch around your meals. Although they only have 6 meals total to choose from, and not every combination is possible, they do allow you to have a vegetarian meal along with two meat dishes if you would like. I'm a big fan of mixing it up in that sense. Although, I feel like I get more for my money when I do the three meat dishes. Meat/seafood is expensive, guys!
Below are some of my creations from Blue Apron, enjoy!
