The weekend was fantastic, as I started by flying into Chicago, where Kaitlin now lives, and we road-tripped up to Waverly. I saw many, many friends and family over the weekend and it was wonderful. Thanks to Kaitlin for letting me drag her along to all of my "meet-ups" with my people. I'm not going to go into detail about our trip itself, because this is more of a music post and I want to talk about how freaking awesome Mumford is in concert :) But I do want to mention that Scratch Cupcakery in Cedar Falls (stores also in Waterloo and Des Moines) make the best cupcakes ever! Kaitlin even said they are better than Georgetown Cupcakes (TAKE THAT!). We went in there to grab one cupcake each and came out with half a dozen, and that doesn't even begin to describe the types of cupcakes they had just on that given day. Just take a look at that picture and not salivate!
Onto the festival! On Friday we got into the festival, grabbed a Goose Island Stopover Ale (beer brewed specifically for the GOTR Stopover) and sat down to enjoy Dawes and My Morning Jacket. Dawes is pretty good and I would love to listen to more of their songs, so I should do some research :) My Morning Jacket's music is good, but as far as entertaining it was a little bit dull. If I was a hardcore fan I probably wouldn't have cared, but considering I didn't know their music well or at all, it was just "ok."
Favorite songs of the night are incredibly hard to pick, honestly because I love them all, but here are a few:
- I Will Wait, still remains one of my favorites by them. LOTS of energy!
- Believe off of their new album. This was their first track released and it cemented my love for their new album, even though it is a very different sound from their old stuff. The song has a great buildup and I am always a fan of those :)
- The Cave always has fans jumping up and down like crazy!
- Ghosts That We Knew-a song that really hit me an hit me good. Very emotional and beautiful
- Roll Away Your Stone, an oldie but a goodie
- Ditmas is my favorite song off their new album, listen to it!
- The Wolf, another new song, was great to close out the concert. Well technically...
- With a Little Help From My Friends closed out the concert with many of the other bands all performing together. It was definitely memorable!
