Not only does this place have an adorable little cafe inside that has quite the varied menu -- basically any truly German food you can think of can be found on it -- but it also has a specialty store full of imported German products (candies, cheeses, mustard, and more!). I didn't have time to look around too much, but for anyone who has ever spent time in Germany, it's worth it to take a look at the market.
As for the food at the cafe, it was so good! As soon as we sat down I told my friend that we needed to come back so I could try the million different things that looked good on the menu. I ended up getting the Grilled Leberkase (I'm too lazy to find the umlaut sign for the a in leberkase-sue me) on the suggestion of the waitress. I had heard of leberkase before, but never tried it so I was going to get the regular leberkase sandwich but she told me her favorite was the grilled and so I ordered that instead, and it was absolutely delicious! I often go to German restaurants and almost always get the schnitzel (because I love it so much), so I was proud of myself for trying something different. I did get spaetzle on the side (like always), but the spaetzle wasn't as good and needed a little bit of oil/butter or sauce on it to give it a bit more flavor. But overall, considering the sandwich was outstanding, I was already looking forward to my next visit. Now, I need to plan it!
If you are ever on the North Shore and looking to try something new and authentic, check out Karl's Sausage Kitchen in Peabody. And yes, I didn't talk about them because I haven't tried any yet, but as their name suggests there are MANY types of sausages on the menu. Would you expect anything less from a German restaurant?
